| Your Saved ArticlesQ, I have been looking at your site for a while, and I have bought 3 of Mittleider books and have been reading them. I would like to give the grow bed gardening a try, but I have a question about the soil One of the fomulas state 50% peat moss, 15% pearlite, and 30% sand.... what kind of sand? the local garden store has "play" sand and "masonary" sand. I live in Zone 8 - Central Mississippi - hot and humid. Is this the best soil formula for my area? Please advise. I'm excited and ready to plant!!! Thanks for your time in reading my email and replying. A. Do not use masonry sand, as it is too fine and won't drain well. You can use other materials that may be less costly than peat moss, such as sawdust, pine needles (ground-up) rice hulls, coffee hulls, coconut husks, or bag-gas (sugar cane residue), or even copi soil (forest mulch).
